Viceregal Lodge in Shimla

Viceregal Lodge in Shimla

The summer residence of 13 Viceroys of India, the Viceregal Lodge in Shimla was even in its heyday an architectural marvel with innovations of the time such as electricity, an indoor tennis court, central heating and running hot and cold water in the bathrooms. This late 19th century building was also the only building in Shimla to take up a whole hilltop – a feat unaccomplished by any other building in Shimla to date.

For Indians, the Viceregal Lodge is of paramount importance mainly due to the fact, that this lodge was the venue where the Simla Conference was held and the document finalizing the partition of India was signed. The Table on which the document was signed is still in the Viceregal Lodge and can be seen as part of the Guided Tours.

Post Independence, the Viceregal Lodge became the summer residence of the Indian President. A couple of years later, it housed the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, which continues to work from the Viceregal Lodge’s grand interiors.

Guided Tours are available in English and Hindi. Timings vary.
