On arrival at Leh, proceed to the hotel for check-in. Due to the sudden change in altitude, you might feel tired and require time for acclimatization. It helps to rest and hence no other activities are scheduled for today.

On arrival at Rangdum, we proceed to set up camp for the night.

With telephone booths and internet cafes, Padum is more developed than Rangdum, which has neither. Rangdum does not even have electricity! The drive from Rangdum to Padum requires an ascent to Pensi La, a mountain pass that connects the Suru Valley to Zanskar and the highest point of Kargil-Padum Road at 14,436 ft. Drive past twin lakes – Stat Tso and Lang Tso and the descend to Padum via the Drang Drung Glacier. On arrival at Padum, we set up camp and settle down to enjoy the scenic surroundings for what remains of the day.

A Buddhist monastery, the Phuktal Gonpa is built into an almost vertical cliff side and centred around a naturally formed cave, where according to popular belief, important sages, scholars and translators including the 16 “Arhats” or legendary followers of Buddha stayed beginning around 2,550 years ago. Today the Phuktal Gompa houses a main temple, prayer rooms, a library, numerous apartments, teaching facilities, a kitchen, and of course the original cave and protected sacred spring. The cave walls are adorned with images of the 16 “Arhats” or legendary followers of Buddha. After a tour of the monastery and an experience of any monastery festival (if your trip coincides with the festival), return to your camp in Purne.

Just about 2 km from Gumburanjon, Lakhong is a shepherd's encampment with meadows and a popular camping site with exquisite views of the Himalayas and brown mud walls that offer a little shelter from the wind. Set up camp here. As we are progressively climbing up, we will stop here to give ourselves time to acclimatize to the changing altitudes. (While our camp at Kargiakh/ Gumburanjon was at 13,287 ft, we have now ascended to 14,665 ft. Our next leg of trekking will take us to 16,732 ft.)

After a leisurely breakfast, break up camp and then continue your trek to Chumik. The trek involves an ascent to Shingo-La, a mountainous pass with an altitude of 16,732 ft located on the border of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Technically, Shingo-La is the easiest 5000m pass for trekkers with no glaciers or steep climbs but plenty of snow almost year-round. This pass also links the Zanskar Valley to the Lahaul Valley and offers exquisite views of glaciers, rivers and a small lake. From Shingo-La, we descend down to Chumik Napko, the first base came in our Himachal Pradesh leg of the trek. Located at an altitude of 14000 to 15000 ft (accounts vary), Chumik Napko is home to just a small tea tent (in summer months only) and the camps of trekkers. Set up camp here.

If we have sufficient time, then we can even visit the Chika Monasteries en-route. On arrival at Darcha, set up camp.

Overnight in Darcha Camp

Day 19: Darcha - Manali

After breakfast, break up camp for one last time and set out for the drive to Manali, driving across Rohtang Pass, a high mountain pass connecting the Lahaul-Spiti Valley with Kullu Valley. The pass is one of the more treacherous mountain passes, not due to its altitude but rather due to its unpredictable weather conditions that bring on sudden thunderstorms and snowstorms. Proceed directly to Manali where we will indulge in a hotel stay - a luxury of sorts, especially after having roughed out in camps for the duration of the trek.
