Sankat Mochan Temple in Shimla

The Sankat Mochan Temple in Shimla, as most devotees can recognize from the name, is devoted to Lord Hanuman, the famed devotee of Lord Rama of Ramayana Epic. According to legend, Lord Hanuman has the form of a monkey and is blessed by immense powers by the Gods. He befriends Lord Rama and plays a major role in the battle between Rama and Ravana in the Epic Battle of Ramayana.

This particular temple is Shimla District, located about 5 km from Shimla City, came into existence in 1960s when a saint, Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj, stumbled upon this place and found the serenity and tranquillity of the woods to be just perfect for meditation. After spending about 10 days here, he wished to have a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman here and his many devotees who included the Lt. Governor of the time, Raja Bhadri, complied.

A temple was constructed and a deity of Lord Hanuman was installed. Over time, the temple has grown exponentially, acquiring the nearby lands for expansion and new temples constructed for the deities of Lord Rama and his consort Sita, Lord Shiva, the Nine Planets, Lord Ganesha and Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj himself were installed. Langar is distributed every Sunday and on Tuesdays. The temple complex includes a small marriage hall.
