Air

The Shimla district has its own airport - Jubbarhatti Airport, about 23 km from Shimla town. After years of being shut, the airport has resumed operations for private as well as commercial flights.

Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme, you can now fly to Shimla in as less as two hours - a short hop in comparison to the overnight journey it takes by road. Alliance Air, a subsidy of Air India, operates regular flights to Shimla, five days a week - from Wednesday to Sunday.

In addition to Shimla, guests can fly to the Chandigarh Domestic Airport, which is approximately 137 Km from Shimla. Shimla can be accessed from Chandigarh by either road or rail. The nearest International Airport, Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, is at Amritsar at a distance of approximately 310 Km from Shimla.

Rail

Shimla is accessible by Rail - it has its own railway station - Shimla Railway Station and a special toy train to service it. The Toy Train, as the Kalka-Shimla Railway is often referred as, offers a scenic journey from Kalka to Shimla via 102 tunnels including a kilometre-long tunnel and 864 bridges. The train chugs slowly, offering panoramic views of the scenic hills, wooded trails, gushing streams and tiny villages in the distance.

Luxury class travel and ordinary coach travel are available. One can also choose to board the high-class trains that come inclusive of meals and feature wide-bay windows, transparent glass roofs and air-conditioning.

Road

Shimla can be easily accessed by road from Delhi as well as Chandigarh. From Delhi, regular buses ply from the interstate bus terminal as well as other pre-designated points. Most buses are overnight buses and cover the distance in little more than 9 hours with stops in-between for restroom breaks and refreshments. Private taxis can also be arranged. Few buses ply from Chandigarh to Shimla; the journey takes a couple of hours.
