Christ Church in Shimla

Christ Church in Shimla

A prominent landmark on the Ridge that can be seen from afar, be it day or night, the Christ Church in Shimla was the first church in India to be built on a hill station and the second oldest church in the whole of North India. Its prominence is such that it is now synonymous with Shimla City itself. Christ Church in Shimla has a history dating back to the 1844, when its design plans were finalized. In 1857, the church was consecrated and the clock and porch were added in 1860 and 1873 respectively. With the exception of the clock, which no longer works, the rest of the church remains in perfect condition to this day.

One of the most remarkable features of Christ Church remains to this day its magnificent stained-glass windows, which are five in number and represent the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, Charity, Fortitude, Patience and Humility. Christ Church is also home to the largest pipe organ in the Indian sub-continent.

Services are held on Sundays in English and Hindi. Timings vary; check site directly. The church is open from 1030 to 1300hrs and from 1415 to 1730hrs.
